Double Windows and Holes in Walls - My New Room Tour
It's taken me nearly a month to finish it and then find the time to photograph it while it's tidy but here it is - my new room! I have hit the jackpot here and will gladly hold my hands up and say that this room is an absolute dream and not because of my supreme interior design skills. It has high ceilings and wooden floors, white(ish) walls and an excessive amount of floor space. I didn't actively set out to bagsy this room it just kind of ended up that this was the room I would be in, and it has so many things I've always wanted but never thought I would be able to have until I was much much older and in a position where I could choose where I lived based on personal taste in decor rather than how close it is to the SU. I've always loved windows with the lines across them (or grilles as Google is telling me they are called), and I've always wanted a room with more than one window - which this room has! It also has double doors so I can make dramatic entrances into the hallway.
This is the first thing you see when you come into the room as these shelves are straight in front of the door in between the two windows. Obviously this is a student house so there is some odd furniture, and this shelving originally had a big white linen cover over it. I took it off cause I wanted to use it as a bookshelf rather than a wardrobe type thing, and also because the cover wasn't in the best condition. This shelf is the wobbliest most unstable thing and I'm sure that one day I'll drunkenly grab onto it and spend the evening mourning my smashed tea set but for now it's steady enough. I weighted it with all my books at the bottom, hiding the less aesthetically pleasing ones behind the prettier editions for maximum Instagram appeal.
I got the cinema lightbox from DePop but I saw a similar one in B&M bargains, and it comes with all the letters so you can write whatever you want. The prints in the frames are actually from a set from Kikki K, and the frames and the tray are from Ikea, but they don't see to do the same frames any more. The rubber egg in the egg cup is a family joke that has gone on for far too many years and gets pride of place here so I don't miss them too much. There's also a few pictures which I printed from PaperWave.
I have a single bed at home so I was already over the moon knowing my new room had a double, but imagine my delight when I arrived to find out it was a KING size! Had to go back to Ikea and exchange all my bedding, but it was a small inconvenience for a luxurious reward. The copper lights are these ones from Amazon and they hold their shape quite well so I didn't have to use anything to fix them to the bed. Sidenote: The blinds in this room are thinner than tissue paper so as dreamy as my bed is - there are no lie ins for me.
One thing I wanted this year was a full length mirror, but they're always so pricey and it's also really difficult to find a way to stand them up on wooden floor when you can't mount them on the wall of a rented property. Basically I bought the cheapest (nearly) full length one I could find in Ikea and then bought this step stool to use to prop it up so that when you stand back you can actually see your whole body. The step stool also means I have somewhere to put nicer shoes and more prints from Etsy (here and here). I really struggled to find prints that were inspiring without making me feel inadequate, because so many are along the lines of "You can do anything you want, travel and live your dreams, fall in love" and I just find this infuriating because realistically you can't do those things when you have a lecture, a food shop to do and then work at 6. The suitcase is from a stall at Camden Market.
Again this cabinet is not something I would ever choose to have in my room and I wasn't sure what to do with it when I first arrived, but it's quite pretty now with the plants and jewellery stand. To the right of this cabinet is my laundry basket and my wardrobe so this corner is kind of a getting ready area.
My desk is one side of the shelves by a window and my bed is the other, because I need some distance when I'm doing work or I just end up lying down by accident. The print here is from Etsy again, and the mirror and is from Ikea.
Another print from Etsy here, and the canvas board has photos of people I think are great on it so that when I'm struggling or don't know what to do I can look at it and hopefully be inspired, or maybe just end up staring at them with hatred for being so successful, who knows. The desk lamp is also Ikea of course, it works but you can't lift it up with confidence because I lost one of the screws while putting it together. Oh the desk is also missing some screws because my housemates and I gave up when some of the fastenings weren't cooperating. Can't wait for my whole room to fall apart!
This table is the strangest thing that existed in my room prior to my arrival. It's shaped like a monkey nut, too high to be a coffee table, too low to be a desk, extremely wobbly, and is laminated the way that school table are. This is one side of my sofa so that you can put drinks and things on it, and is useful for putting my printer on so it doesn't take up room on my desk. I feel like I've never watched a room tour where ugly things like big printers are shown but that's not very realistic so I'm going to leave it in. I did try to make it prettier by putting this moon print (my absolute fave) on it. The rest of this table is pretty books that didn't fit in on my shelves, coffee table type books, colouring books, and my tiny chest of drawers (similar here) that house my keys and chargers and things like that.
So I was pretty much blessed with this room by some higher power, but I hope that these pictures also show the uglier parts of it too, and how I've tried to remedy them. I almost got through the whole post without telling you the best example of this - that this gorgeous room also has a reasonably sized hole in its wall, which I've covered with a poem, in true tumblr pretentious literary student style.
