Jomny Sun: A Hot Water Bottle for Your Brain
With blurb recommendations by Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton and Moana) and Joss Whedon (cowriter of the original Toy Story), it's hardly a low-key debut but Jomny Sun's hype seems relatively confined to the Twitter, and I think it should go far beyond that.
If you're not familiar with Jomny (Jonathan Sun's Twitter persona) then allow me to introduce you with some of the most beautiful amalgamations of 140 characters the world has ever seen.
I'll start you off with a less heart-wrenching one to ease you in:

Good stuff right?

Now we're really getting into it.

Yeah.
Well I think we're all on the same page now. Jomny's first book everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too speaks directly to the mushy and terrified marshmallows we all are at our cores. It's an illustrated tale of an alien's exploration of earth, where he reacts to new friends with humour, and new feelings with heart-melting rawness. Somehow Jomny Sun has found ways to craft jarring yet simple depictions of anxiety and imposter syndrome that shock with their accuracy. Somehow, he even knows (and illustrates) exactly what you're feeling when you read this book - a small sadness that you could never make something this good.
A weird kind of nostalgic comfort comes from this story being illustrated like a children's book, similar to how having your hair stroked feels.
For when you're too confused or overwhelmed to even talk (or think) about it - this book is the perfect hot water bottle for your frozen and aching brain. A cup of tea could also help. And maybe a nap too.
I love Jomny and I love this book and I just want everyone to know about it. But really, if Joss and Lin can't convince you to buy it, then I probably can't either.
You can buy everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too here.
